Ann Karlholm – Contemporary Craft Woodworker

From cabinetmaker to contemporary artist

Ann Karlholm is a Swedish woodworker who started out as a cabinetmaker but now focuses on contemporary art. Her work emphasizes simplicity, creating refined pieces that blend modern and rustic elements. She combines clean lines with organic textures, crafting pieces that are both timeless and innovative, deeply rooted in Scandinavian tradition yet reflective of a modern aesthetic.

A Childhood Dream Carved into Reality

After high school, Ann Karlholm pursued studies at several art schools in Stockholm, immersing herself in painting, drawing, and sculpture for several years. However, her true passion had always been woodworking, a dream she had nurtured since childhood. After spending a year working at an architecture firm, she decided to follow her calling and enrolled in the prestigious Malmsten’s school to train as a furniture maker.

The Path from Joinery to Artistry

Her time at Malmsten’s was invaluable, providing her with deep knowledge of wood as a material, traditional joinery techniques, and the use of tools and machinery. She completed her education with a journeyman’s test, earning her journeyman’s certificate in furniture making.

Shortly after, she founded Karlholm Design and eventually established her own workshop. For many years, she designed and built custom furniture for clients, but over time, she felt the need for a shift.

Seeking to infuse more artistry into her work, she transitioned into craft-based woodworking, creating boxes, chests and sculptures. Since 2015, she has been a member of Konsthantverkarna in Stockholm, where her work, along with that of many other talented artisans, is showcased and sold.

Discovering Tormek

Ann first encountered a Tormek sharpening system during her training at Malmsten’s in the early 90s. From the start, she was drawn to the simplicity and efficiency of the Tormek concept. With the right jig and technique, achieving a precise edge is easy and consistent. Over the years, she has used many of Tormek’s jigs, but the ones she relies on most are SE-77 Square Edge Jig and KJ-45 Knife Jig.
