Ulf Jansson – End Grain Woodturner
The legacy of precision, artistry, and inspiration.

For the Swedish woodturner Ulf Jansson, woodworking is not just a craft but an expression of heritage, creativity, and precision. From his early days learning from skilled family members to his status as an internationally acclaimed woodturner, he has turned passion into mastery.

Turning Passion into Precision
For Ulf Jansson, woodworking isn’t just a craft – it’s a way of life deeply rooted in his family history. With a grandfather who was a master cabinetmaker and a father known for his handy skills; it seems woodworking runs in his veins. “It’s hard to pinpoint when it all started,” Ulf says. “It feels like it’s always been there.”
From a young age, Ulf’s talent was nurtured. His bond with his craft began in earnest during his school years when his woodshop teacher became his mentor, offering extra lessons and introducing him to the world of woodworking tools. Even as he pursued an engineering degree at Chalmers University of Technology, Ulf couldn’t let go of his woodworking passion, carving pieces in his dorm room.
Fast forward several decades, Ulf has built a career not only as a successful engineer but also as a world-renowned woodturner. His works are celebrated for their elegance and precision, a testament to his technical knowledge and artistic vision.
Mastering the Edge with Tormek
Sharp tools are at the heart of Ulf’s craft, and Tormek is a trusted partner in maintaining them. “Sharpening is central to my work,” he explains. Ulf’s precision woodturning relies on tools honed to perfection, allowing him to create signature thin-walled bowls and intricate designs with unparalleled finesse. To never let dull tools constrain him from what he can achieve is an ambition of his.
Tormek's machines is a central part of his workshop, and has been for a long‑time. He originally began with a Tormek 2000, then upgraded to a Tormek T-7, and finally acquired his current sharpening partner - the Tormek T-8. Now, equipped with a variety of jigs, including the SVD-186 R Gouge Jig, SVS-38 Short Tool Jig and the SVS-50 Multi Jig, he can maintain consistent sharpness and experiment with innovative techniques. He states, “Everything with an edge can be used for woodturning and woodworking, if you only know how!”.
Ulf’s philosophy for the craft is simple: with a limited number of tools that are easy to keep sharp, comes results and happiness.

A Global Ambassador for Woodturning
Over the years, Ulf’s expertise has taken him across the globe. As a demonstrator at prestigious events, including the American Association of Woodturners’ symposium, Ulf inspires audiences with his craftsmanship and techniques. “I’ve been privileged to share my passion at events worldwide,” he says.
One of the many countries Ulf has visited and worked in is Japan where he served as an Artist-In-Residence. There he engaged in woodturning and exhibitions, demonstrating his artistry in Tobetsu, outside Sapporo, and at a large event at the Wood Research Center in Asahikawa.
The influence Ulf has extends beyond the stage. As a speaker, educator, and mentor, he imparts his knowledge generously, whether through lectures at Malmsten’s at Linköping University, or by sharing insights on his popular Instagram account.
Words of Wisdom for Aspiring Woodworkers
Ulf emphasizes the importance of regular maintenance, noting that sharp tools make all the difference in achieving smooth, professional results. His advice for aspiring woodworkers is:
- Sharpen often. “I never met someone who regrets stopping and sharpening their tools.” Ulf says.
- Keep Your Grinding Stone in Shape. Use the TT-50 Truing Tool for keeping the surface on the stone in level.
- The Shavings Tells You About Quality. The characteristics of your shavings tell you about how good the edge is. Thin, smooth shavings usually mean your tool is sharp and cutting cleanly.
Looking Ahead: Honoring Tradition and Embracing Innovation
Even after decades in the craft, Ulf remains as curious and driven as ever. From upcoming demonstrations in Norway and France to developing new techniques in his workshop, his passion for woodworking continues to grow. He remains curious and is continuously developing his knowledge and understanding. “You can’t just look at a computer screen to understand. The craft takes time, and it is about coordinate muscle memory, eye and ear” he explains.
Just as Ulf discovered his passion for woodworking at a young age, his grandkids seem to be following in his footsteps. Whether it’s woodturning, drilling, carving, or even sharpening, several of them enjoy spending time with him in the workshop, all of course under the supervision of their grandfather. For Ulf, it’s not just about the craft – it’s about nurturing curiosity and creativity in the next generation.
With his dedication to craftsmanship and his unwavering commitment to precision, Ulf Jansson is a true inspiration to woodworkers around the world – and proof that a sharp tool and a sharper mind can accomplish anything.
