Miguel Walch – Woodcarver
Captures the mystical in his carved masks.

Miguel Walch is an Austrian craftsman, specializing in carving traditional Krampus masks. His work draws on local folklore and a focuses on proportion and detail to create pieces that reflect the Tyrol region’s heritage. While currently focused on commissioned projects, Miguel looks forward to exploring larger, modern sculptures in the future, blending tradition with new ideas.

A Lifelong Fascination with Krampus Masks
For Miguel Walch, the mystique of the Krampus has always been deeply personal. Growing up in Tyrol in western Austria, Miguel found inspiration in the legendary figure that roams the region during the festive season.
His journey into craftsmanship began when, as a young boy, he purchased a simple wooden Krampus mask. Jokingly, Miguel told his mother he could probably make one himself. That Christmas, she gifted him a block of wood and a set of carving knives. And at just twelve years old, he carved his first mask, sparking a lifelong passion.
What began as a childhood experiment evolved into a professional pursuit of perfecting the craft. Over the years, Miguel honed his skills, creating masks that tell stories – each a blend of Tyrolean folklore and his unique creative touch.

The Art of Carving is Rooted in Balance
For Miguel, the essence of carving lies in proportion. “The first few minutes are crucial,” he says. “The distances between the eyes, nose, and mouth determine the mask’s entire expression.” A single miscalculation can alter the character of the piece.
This attention to detail makes sharp tools indispensable. “When your tools are well-sharpened, the process becomes smoother and far more enjoyable.”
Tormek Brings Consistency to Miguel's Carving
For many years, Miguel took a pragmatic, almost reluctant approach to sharpening his tools. “I used to sharpen by hand, but only when absolutely necessary,” he admits. It was a time-consuming process, and the results were inconsistent. That changed when Miguel discovered Tormek. “With Tormek, I learned to appreciate the precision it offers. Being able to set and maintain the sharpening angle has transformed how I work.”
Today, every carving knife in Miguel’s workshop features the same bevel angle, ensuring consistent performance and precision. “The tools glide through the wood with ease,” he explains. His favorite Tormek accessories include the CW‑220 Composite Honing Wheel, which he uses for quick touch-ups for his carving tools and of course for finishing his sharpening. The DF‑250 Diamond Wheel Fine is Miguels go-to for refining the bevel. But adds: “If a blade needs serious attention, I think that the SG-250 Original Grindstone is perfect for resetting and restoring the edge.”
Advice for Fellow Craftspeople
Miguel encourages beginners and seasoned craftspeople alike to view sharpening as an integral part of their craft. “Don’t wait until your tools are unusable to sharpen them,” he advises. A quick honing on the composite wheel can often restore an edge, while sharpening on the diamond wheel and original grindstone provide options for more substantial maintenance.
One tip Miguel highly recommends is moistening the composite honing wheel with a few drops of water for a smoother honing experience. “It’s a small detail, but it makes a big difference,” he says. For restoring old or badly damaged blades, he uses the method of holding the edge 90 degrees to the grinding wheel to remove chips and dents in the edge. When the edge is smooth again, he creates a new bevel and finish it of by honing.

Looking Ahead: From Masks to Modernity
While Miguel’s workshop is currently busy fulfilling commissions, he dreams of expanding his repertoire. “I’d love to carve a larger, modern sculpture someday” he shares.
These aspirations may remain on the horizon for now, but for Miguel, the journey is as rewarding as the destination. Each project brings new challenges and opportunities to refine his skills.
For Miguel Walch, carving is more than a craft – it’s a way to preserve tradition while embracing innovation. With the right tools and a deep respect for the process, he continues to transform blocks of wood into stories, bringing the legendary Krampus to life with every cut.
